2015 BELL-HERRON SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN
FROM THE PRESIDENT
THE FIRST 50 YEARS
Can you remember what things were like in 1963? For those of you who can’t remember, let me help. The cost of mailing a letter was 5 cents; the push button phone was first introduced, the Beatles cut their first album, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted its first class of enshrines. But a couple of other things took place that year right here in Carrollton, Ohio. Wendell Herron retired as Superintendent of Carrollton Schools, officially ending the “Bell-Herron” era that spanned over 50 years. More importantly, the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation was formed as a way of honoring W.R. Bell and Wendell Herron for their years of leadership.
As it turned out, the Foundation’s organizers turned out to be dreamers. Those dreamers had a vision well beyond 1963. They saw young people in a small rural school district and saw possibilities. Not only did they see possibilities, they saw opportunities, and they had the vision to see education as the bridge to those opportunities.
As this vision caught hold, with the grant of a single $400.00 scholarship, others began to see and dream too. Moms and dads, grandparents, truck drivers, farmers, nurses, and grocers; people from all walks of life bought into the dream. Fifty years have gone by since then and the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation is now one of the largest and strongest scholarship foundations in the area. In its 50th year the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation awarded $50,000.00 in scholarships, bringing the total awarded since 1963 to over One million dollars. How proud those dreamers in 1963 would be! How proud we are today!
Of course, none of this would have been possible without you, our donors. Whether your gift is big or small; whether it is a one-time donation or an annual pledge, I thank you so much for your generosity. But the job is not over. We must now continue the dream for the next 50 years and beyond. I hope you will find a spot in your heart to support the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation with a generous gift to help us continue to help young people. Together we can continue to chase the dream.
-Sean R. H. Smith, President
